The Central Government is going to ‘change’ the tax on diesel fuel, announced the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.
Minister Reyes Maroto said that this “ecological move” would be included in the 2019 Budget, which however, will probably be delayed in its presentation and parliamentary approval.
He said, “a draft has still not been tabled to see the ‘small print’ with the affected sectors,” but it is going to push the price of diesel at the pumps up – the question is to what degree.
The Government claims that it has opted for this increased taxation because the Carbon Dioxide, CO2 levels have shot up.
Previously another member of the Sánchez cabinet stated that “the days of diesel are numbered,” which brings about big changes at the pumps.
Editorial comment: two observations here: diesel produces less CO2 than petrol, however it is more toxic. Secondly, this vague announcement probably has more to do with “throwing it out there to see the response” than actually disclosing what they have already decided.
