Nearly two hundred fake designer handbags ready for distribution were seized by local police officers in Arrecife, after several weeks of investigation, raided a hidden establishment which was making and selling the bogus handbags and wallets.
The police operation resulted in the arrest of Y.D., a 39-year-old Moroccan national who was charged with a crime against industrial property.
In the raid 945 plaques were seized with the distinctive marks of renowned prestigious brands , intended to promote the authenticity of the final product.
The raid was was carried out by agents of the Documents Unit (UDOC) with the collaboration of the Anti-Piracy Commission, who valued the seized goods at 662,650 euros.
The authorities say that persons accused of this type of offenses can face fines and imprisonment, as well as being ordered to compensate the injured brand. In this case the brand had already contacted Local Police and requested Police intervention, as well as informing the defendant by letter of their knowledge of his activities.
