Guardia Civil Officers from Tías arrested a 29-year-old man known only by the initials AS, a foreign national with a police record, accused of not helping a 41-year-old female Irish tourist who drowned in the early hours of Sunday morning at Playa Grande, Puerto del Carmen.
Lancelot Digital reported that witnesses said that the woman arrived on the beach with a man at around 3am. The accused remained on the shore while she bathed.
Moments later, the woman appeared on the shore face down. The man, realising this, left the scene of the accident without helping her or calling for assistance, the Guardia Civil reported.
Witnesses administered first aid to the woman and called the emergency services, who could only certify her death on arrival.
A violent death caused by physical aggression has been ruled out.
Police were initially focused on the identification of the victim until, 48 hours after the incident, when a security guard found a purse containing the documentation of the deceased, who was on vacation on the island with her parents.
Finally, the Guardia Civil was able to locate the person accompanying the victim, who was arrested.
